Vintage 14ct and 9ct Gold Diamond Pendant Necklace
Vintage 14ct and 9ct Gold Diamond Pendant Necklace
The vintage yellow and white gold chain necklace consists of a centrepiece made of three pendants, set with diamonds, joined by gold wire links, all 18ct gold, supported from two sections of 9ct gold curb chain with a bolt ring closure. All the diamonds are round-cut and are tube-set. The tubes for white diamonds are made of white gold, whereas that for the yellow diamond is made of yellow gold. All the rest of the necklace is made of yellow gold.
The three pendants, each, consist of a bar downcomer supporting a round, dished element, with a roughened surface. The centre, larger pendant has a white diamond set at the top, and another in the centre of the downcomer (each circa 0.03ct), as well as a central fancy yellow (approximately 3.4mm diameter – circa 0.15ct). The yellow diamond is surrounded by eight white diamonds of two sizes (4x circa 0.04ct, and 4x circa 0.005ct) arranged in an alternating pattern.
The outer, smaller, pendants each have a white diamond (each circa 0.015ct) at the top of the downcomer and three diamonds (each circa 0.01ct) surrounding a gold bead at the centre of the round element. There are thus, in addition to the 0.15ct yellow diamond, there is a total of 18 white diamonds of varying sizes adding to a total weight of approximately 0.33ct.
The pendants and connectors are unmarked but have been electronically scanned and test as 18ct gold. The chain tests as 9ct gold, and its clasp is marked “ET+ 9CT”. This is a maker's mark for E. Tiessen, a manufacturing jeweller based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg at the time.
