Handmade Modernist Egon Guenther Sterling Silver Clip-on Earrings
The vintage, clip-on earrings each have a hand-beaten, convex circular, sterling silver dish mounted with a raised amorphous shape. These shapes intentionally do not match, but are rather intended to complement each other. The rear of each dish has a clip-on element. The earrings are each stamped “silver” and “eg” for Egon Guenther. Egon Guenther (1921-2015) was born in Mannheim, Germany, and in 1951 he immigrated to South Africa. He initially started a jewellery workshop in Johannesburg and later established an art gallery on Bree Street. He worked closely with such artists as Cecil Skotnes and Edoardo Villa, and he was the founder of the Amadlozi group that established the careers of Ezrom Legae and Sydney Khumalo among others.
