Egon Guenther Sterling Silver and Citrine Pendant Brooch
Modernist Egon Guenther Sterling Silver and Citrine Pendant Brooch
The handcrafted, vintage, Modernist pendant is of a flattened amorphous shape, in a matte finish, with curved edges, and a shaped inner recess that is mounted with decorative silver elements and a tube-set, round-cut citrine (circa 0.40ct). The rear of the pendant is affixed with a loop to allow for a chain or rope, and it also has a pin and clip for the pendant to be alternatively used as a brooch. The pendant is stamped “silver” and “eg” for Egon Guenther. Egon Guenther (1921-2015) was born in Mannheim, Germany, and in 1951 he immigrated to South Africa. He initially started a jewellery workshop in Johannesburg and later established an art gallery on Bree Street. He worked closely with such artists as Cecil Skotnes and Edoardo Villa, and he was the founder of the Amadlozi group that established the careers of Ezrom Legae and Sydney Khumalo among others.
NB The necklace rope shown in some of the images is for display purposes only, and is not included with the pendant.
