Art Deco 18ct Yellow Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Ruby Ring
Art Deco 18ct Yellow Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Ruby Ring
The antique dress ring was probably made in the 1920’s when Art Deco design elements were beginning to emerge. It features a two-tone composition – with an 18ct yellow gold shank and undercarriage, supporting a white head – which is typical of Edwardian and 1920’s jewellery, yet the large, stylised head, and the use of platinum in its construction, shows a move towards Art Deco flourishes and use of materials that were embraced from the mid 1920’s, gained strength in the 1930’s, and then began to fade out in the 1940’s. The decorative head is pierced, and is set with a central, round, brilliant old-cut diamond (circa 0.35ct, clarity VS, colour G-H) in a rub-over setting. There are two rubies (circa 0.15ct each, deep pink-red, with some typical age-related surface wear) – one above and one below this central diamond – that are oval-cut and in rub-over settings. In addition, the head features six smaller, claw-set, round-cut diamonds, plus a further diamond in each shoulder (circa 0.4ct combined total). The ring is stamped “18CT” and “PLT” plus other unidentified hallmarks.
