Modernist Sterling Silver, Diamond and Pearl Ring by Kurt Donau
The large, chunky, Modernist style, sterling silver ring has a square-shaped head with a polished gilded frame surrounding an oxidised recessed panel. The oxidised recess is surmounted by a tube-set old round-cut diamond (circa 4.1mm / 0.25ct, colour H-I, clarity I), and three round, cultured pearls (one x 6mm and two x 5mm; smooth, soft warm grey colour with no visible blemishes) in a haphazard but balanced arrangement. The body of the ring extends down to form the broad shank, all in a textured silver finish. The inside of the shank is stamped, “STERLING SILVER” and “kd” for Kurt Donau. Kurt Donau is a Swiss born jeweller of worldwide renowned, who lived and worked in South Africa from the 1960s for several decades, before returning to Switzerland where he continues to trade. While in Johannesburg he worked with both Egon Guenther and Jack Freidman, and collaborated with the likes of artists Cecil Skotnes, Eduardo Villa and Hannes Harrs.
